The objective of the quantity surveying undergraduate degree programme is to provide students with a sound theoretical and practical base to enable them measure, value, cost and specify construction resources, and to become active players in the rational identification, utilization and control of resources within the construction industry.

Graduates of this programme are expected to gain employment in both the private and public sector. The major input of the revised programme is to train quantity surveyors with sufficient skills for the public and private sectors: government ministries, local authorities, departments and parastatals, construction firms, and private consultancy firms offering quantity surveying services. The updated and diversified courses will crosspollinate existing departments within the Faculty of Technology.

The longterm objective is to contribute to poverty alleviation through training of cost management and control professionals for better and more rational use of resource within the construction industry in Uganda. Laboratory and computer training in the curriculum provide handon opportunities to apply knowledge to solving practical problems of engineering. There are also practical training components

1.To enhance the ability of students to learn the various principles of computations related to quantity surveying.

2.To enhance skill of students in preparing detail estimates and bill of quantities for various civil engineering projects.

3.To familiarize students with tender and contract documents.

Quantity Surveyors are an essential link between the designer and contractor on construction projects, providing key advice on costs and contracts.

A quantity surveyor is concerned with the costs and financial management of the building life-cycle. In this course, we will cover both pre and post contract processes, the commercial management of construction and concepts on various procurement options; the production of tender documents; the contractor's tendering procedure and strategy; and the detailed process undertaken by the contractor to price tender documents.

Quantity Surveyors require a wide range of skills and knowledge covering the financial, legal, managerial, economic and communicative aspects of a project from inception to completion.
