Through the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician courses in this college technology program, you'll acquire a broad knowledge of the design, installation and service techniques of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems for commercial and residential settings. You'll learn to service, maintain, size and select equipment for air conditioning and refrigeration applications, while also being introduced to hydronics and forced air heating.These applied science studies will include a co-op work placement component. To make your co-op experience meaningful, you'll work closely with the Career Services and Co-operative Education department staff. At the same time, they'll collaborate with a wide variety of organizations in business and industry to assist you with the sourcing of and preparation for co-op work placement opportunities.Refrigeration and air conditioning technicians or mechanics install, repair, service, and design residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC/R (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration) equipment.

The program provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of refrigeration systems, air conditioning, piping, welding and electrical wiring. Special emphasis will be placed on safety regulations as they pertain to using, reusing, recycling, recovering, and reclaiming HCFC and HFC refrigerants as well as the safe handling and disposal of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).Prior to starting the program, you will be invited to attend a program overview information session. You will also be invited to participate in a math and reading skills diagnostic testing session that will advise you of your program readiness.

This is a not an apprenticeship program, but may provide credit transfer opportunities towards apprenticeship. The Government of Manitoba, Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade offers apprenticeship training that combines on-the-job practical skills development with levels of technical training.
