Gain skills and knowledge in all aspects and issues of logistics in a sustainable supply chain. These include purchasing and procurement of materials, inventory flow and control, storage and material handling in warehousing, economics of mode of transport, and distribution and shipment.The objectives of this course are to develop an understanding of system support planning, ensuring logistics support is effectively considered in a system from a total life-cycle perspective and to understand the implications of an extended supply chain. The content includes the functions of the various components of logistics, logistics engineering and management, system design for supportability, through to continued assessment of the overall effectiveness of support throughout the system life-cycle. Integration of the supply chain, flow of information, materials, services, human resources and money across the supply chain, coordinating technology across tiered suppliers, creation of trust, enterprise architecture in the supply chain, waste and minimising transaction costs are also addressed.To develop an understanding of the role of logistics management in operations and supply chain management including the contribution of logistics to creating and adding value through domestic and global supply chains, and in enabling organisations to achieve their strategic purpose and objectives in a holistic manner.An overview of logistics; logistics and information technology; strategic and financial logistics; organisational and managerial issues in logistics (including reverse logistics); the supply chain management concept; demand management; order management and customer service; inventory management; distribution centre; warehouse and plant location; warehousing management; packaging and materials management; transportation and transportation management and international logistics.
When the student completes this course, they should have the:

Skills:to initiate strategies that can improve relationships between the company with its suppliers, customers and third parties for better business performance
to detect the challenges that affect effective logistics process management and advise management on how to address these challenges.
to develop a cost-benefit analysis framework in relation to a decision whether to insourcing/outsourcing any of the logistics process
General competence:to be able to advise (management) on the use of logistics concepts, tools and systems for increased business efficiency and effectiveness.
