Turning Loads

A certified rigger is a person who has been trained and certified to handle and move loads. The level of certification depends upon the individual’s training, knowledge, skill base, and ability to perform functions related to the selection, inspection, and proper use of rigging equipment.

This person may be qualified in a craft or trade and carry an occupational title such as iron worker, electrician, carpenter, millwright, mechanic, laborer, mason, longshoreman, lineman, pipe fitter, boilermaker, and the like. (The persons described in the categories above will be referred to as rigger even though they carry another occupational title.)

Rigging is the process of moving heavy load with slings, chains, hoists and other special tools. The equipment used for lifting and moving loads is also called rigging. Cranes can be very dangerous when used in an unsafe manner. It is the signal person that provides instructions to the crane operator and it is vital that the crane operator follow the signal person’s instructions. Both of these individuals play an important role in the overall safety of crane operation. The two-part hand signaling course covers basic skills and knowledge needed to use hand or voice signals to direct the movements of mobile and tower cranes. In addition, guidelines for using voice signals are provided.

And rigging-related accidents can often be deadly, due to the large and heavy loads that are lifted. A small mis-calculation or a brief moment of inattention, and tragedy could strike. Once a load falls not much can be done to stop it, and there is little time for people to move safely out of the way. A coworker can be injured or killed, and expensive equipment and cargo could be damaged or destroyed, even the crane itself.

Overhead Crane Rigging & Slinging training includes load limits and capacity, lifting, use of chains, slings, spreader bars, grabbers,

and other attachments. This course is divided into both a theory portion with a written test and additional practical training where

operators will perform pre-use inspections of both the crane and rigging components followed by advanced rigging demonstrations

while operating the overhead crane

in a safe training environment.
