Mechanicalengineering is one of the broadest and most versatile of the engineeringprofessions. This is reflected in the portfolio of current activities in theDepartment of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), one that has widened rapidly inthe past decade. Today, our faculty are involved in a wide range of projects,including designing tough hydro gels, using nanostructure surfaces for cleanwater and thermal management of microelectronics, developing efficient methodsfor robust design, the building of robotics for land and underwaterexploration, creating optimization methods that autonomously generatedecision-making strategies, developing driverless cars, inventingcost-effective photovoltaic cells, developing thermal and electrical energystorage systems, using acoustics to explore the ocean of one of Jupiter'smoons, studying the biomimetics of swimming fish for underwater sensingapplications, developing physiological models for metastatic cancers, inventingnovel medical devices, exploring 3D printing of nanostructures andmacrostructures, and developing coatings to create nonstick surfaces.
Mechanical Engineering is aprofessional engineering discipline that involves the application of principlesof physics for analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanicalsystems. It requires a solid understanding of key concepts including mechanics,kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. Practitioners of mechanical engineering,known as mechanical engineers, use these principles and others in the designand analysis of automobiles, aircraft, heating & cooling systems, buildingsand bridges, industrial equipment and machinery, and more. Mechanicalengineers are also expected to understand and be able to apply basic conceptsof calculus, as well as advanced mathematical concepts which may includedifferential equations and partial differential equations, Laplace &Fourier transforms, linear and modern algebra, and differential geometry. TheMechanical Engineering program also requires varying amounts of research andcommunity projects to gain practical problem-solving experience. Mechanical engineering studentsusually hold one or more internships while studying though this is nottypically mandated by the university. The theory classes of many subjects arebeing supported by the practical work for which different laboratories areestablished. The Mechanical Engineering Workshop also includes facilities fortraining in machining, fitting, forging, foundry, welding, electric connectionsand wood working. The training is not restricted to the students of MechanicalEngineering only and students of other disciplines also undergo training in theworkshop. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the responsible developmentof products, processes, and power, at scales ranging from molecules to largeand complex systems. From the tiniest nanotechnology, through to cars andbuildings, to airplanes and space stations, mechanical engineers areresponsible for the design and development of most things. Studying mechanicalengineering is a combination of science, math’s, and computing. It’s the studyof machinery, and how to manufacture and maintain it at all levels. It’s alimitless subject, which plays a role in everything from vehicles to cities,energy to artificial intelligence, military to healthcare, and everything inbetween. Mechanicalengineering is considered to be one of the most challenging undergraduatedegrees on offer, so you won’t be surprised to hear that entry requirements canbe steep. Generally, you’ll need to have a qualification in math’s and/orphysics. But, just as importantly, you’ll need to show good grades inwhichever subjects you’re studying. Other subjects that will support anapplication for mechanical engineering include further math’s, designtechnology, computing, product design, and the other sciences. When it comes toyour skills and extracurricular activities, universities will be looking forpracticality, attention to detail, proficiency with technology, computing, andnumeracy.
