This course examines the basic concepts of heating, ventilation and air conditioning in homes and small scale industrial and commercial buildings. Students study the most common types of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment using blueprints and layouts so that these features will be easily recognizable to them in the field. This course will stress applications and configurations as opposed to design and installation. This course incorporates renewable and conventional energy systems, and shows how to identify these systems in the field.

This course covers design aspects of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, hydronic systems for commercial and residential applications. Design and selection of heating and cooling system components, boilers, air handling units, refrigeration systems, hydronic system components, terminal equipment, fans, pumps, compressed air properties and indoor air quality are also covered. Students are required to prepare term projects on heating and cooling load calculations for commercial and residential buildings.
