Wateem Physiotherapyeducation is based on a fully integrated curriculum and includes interdisciplinarystudies. Commencing Semester 1, the curriculum is structured aroundpatient centered learning. Conditions for which people typicallyseek physiotherapy provide the context for integrating learningabout biomedical sciences and physiotherapy skills. In the lateryears of the course, the focus moves from campus based patient scenariosto learning in a clinical environment. This provides opportunitiesfor students to appreciate the relevance of on-going learning in thecontext of supervised health care delivery.Wateem Physiotherapyeducation facilitates development of skills through smallgroup learning. Other features of this degree are opportunities toexperience rural health care delivery and Inter-ProfessionalEducation (IPE). In IPE, students spend some time eachsemester learning and collaborating with students enrolled in otherhealth science courses including Occupational Therapy,Nursing, Paramedic and Radiography.
The Bachelor ofPhysiotherapy (Honours) is a challenging and demandingcourse. Students can expect to spend significant time inself-directed learning that supports the course of study. Studentswill be expected to be fit to undertake the course by acceptingresponsibility to maintain their health and take adequate rest. Clinical attachmentsacross all years of the course are compulsory. In the thirdand fourth years of study, the majority of time is spent in clinicaleducation. Some flexibility may be required of students, both interms of hours worked at clinics, and scheduling of clinicalattachments. Students can expect to have rural attachments duringthe course Students should take these mattersinto consideration when considering casual employment.
Physical Therapy, also known asphysiotherapy is a dynamic profession concerned with evaluation andrehabilitation of patient disabled by pain, disease, or injury and theirtreatment by physical therapeutic measure. The objective of the program is toproduce group of highly competent physiotherapists to fulfill the increasing atnational and international level.
Doctor of physiotherapy (DPT):- The doctor of physiotherapy (DPT) – 5 years program is a Post-baccalaureatedegree conferred upon successful completion of duration. The DPT Degreewas created by American Physiotherapy Association (APTA). The “Vision 2020”states that “By 2020, physical therapy will be provided by physical therapistswho are doctors of physiotherapy recognized by consumers & otherhealth-care professionals as the practitioners of choice to whom consumers havedirect access for the diagnosis of, intervention for, & prevention ofimpairments, functional limitations, & disabilities related to movement,function & health.
History of Physiotherapy inPakistan:- The school of Physiotherapy was established in 1956 by theFederal Government, Ministry of Health & Social Welfare with the assistanceof World Health Organization (WHO) at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centerpremises. Initially, the school offered a 2 years Diploma course with theminimum entrance qualification of matriculation (science group). In 1961, the 2years program was upgraded to a 3 years Diploma. Later on, the program wasraised to BSc Physiotherapy Degree (3 years) in 1963, affiliated with theUniversity of Karachi, and pertinent changes were added & made in thesyllabus according to the need. The International faculties of Physiotherapy hadupgraded their syllabi. In order to match those standards; in 1999, BScPhysiotherapy course was upgraded to 4 years BS Physiotherapy Degree Course.Recently, following the “Vision 2020 of APTA”, the 4 years BSPT Program wasupgraded to 5 years DPT (Doctor of Physiotherapy) Program in 2008 to meet theInternational standard. At present, 26 Institutions are serving in the field ofPhysiotherapy in Pakistan.
