The course provides knowledge of optical fiber waveguide at fundamental level, essentials of an optical fiber communication system and understanding of various components of an optical fiber telecommunication system.Fiber Optics Training (Associate) is offered at SINA Institute of Networks and Aesthetics. The Fiber Optics Training is designed for anyone interested in learning basic fiber optic networking and becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. This course also introduces the students to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber to the Desk), FTTH (Fiber to the Home, LAN/WAN fiber networks, and basic fusion and mechanical splicing. Supplemental hands-on sessions will include a multimode OSP cable. This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities. This study will include both mechanical and fusion splicing techniques along with the actual OTDR trace session.Fiber-optic communication is at the core of contemporary high-tech and will remain so in the future. When a student completes this course, he/she should be able to:

Understand the functionality of each of the components that comprise a fiber-optic communication system: transmitter, fiber, amplifier, and receiver.

Understand the properties of optical fiber that affect the performance of a communication link.

Understand to differentiate between direct modulation and external electro-optic modulation.

Understand basic optical amplifier operation and its effect on signal power and noise in the system.

Apply concepts listed above to the design of a basic communication link.This course will aim to introduce students to the fundamentals of fiber optic communications, which constitute the backbone of the internet. The course will start with a refresher on the operation of key components needed for an effective fiber optic communication system, and then show how these components interact at a system level. Finally, the course will conclude with outlook for future research in extending the capabilities of these networks to higher bandwidths and quantum-secured communications.

Students taking this course will be required to complete four (4) proctored exams using the edX online Proctortrack software.

Completed exams will be scanned and sent using Gradescope for grading by Professor Bermel.

Fiber Optic Communications is one course in a growing suite of unique, 1-credit-hour short courses being developed in an edX/Purdue University collaboration. Students may elect to pursue a verified certificate for this specific course alone or as one of the six courses needed for the edX/Purdue MicroMasters program in Nanoscience and Technology
