Our Medical Radiography programtrains individuals in X-ray imaging. The academic basis for theRadiography major is interdisciplinary and gathers knowledge from medicine,physics, technology and nursing. The major has a clear clinical orientation,and its main goal is to provide knowledge on various methods to produce documentationmaterials as a basis for diagnosis and treatment, as well as knowledge of thetreatment methods that exist within the field.
The Wateem Medical RadiographyTechnology (MRAD) program utilizes a provincial curriculum to prepare studentsfor critical, rewarding jobs in the medical field. Medical radiographyincludes imaging technologies such as x-ray, computed tomography, mammography,fluoroscopy, and interventional procedures. Medical radiography is suited forpeople with a strong sense of responsibility and interest in other people's well-being.People who thrive in medical radiography are able to work well with bothtechnology and people, including patients and other medical professionals, insensitive, stressful situations. Combine a passion for technology with sharpanalytical skills and a desire to help others, and you’ll have the idealapplicant for a radiography and medical technology degree. Far from beingsimply technicians, radiographers can play a huge part in a patient’s journey –in fact, therapeutic radiographers will build up extensive personalrelationships with patients, as they work with them daily to administer theirrequired treatment. This is often using x-rays (and other ionising radiation)to treat cancer and tumours.

Overview of RadiologicalTechnology Course
This introductory course is takenin the first semester of a 2-year program for radiological technologists.Concepts reviewed in this course include vocabulary, basic radiation safety anduse of radiological technology for medical imaging. History of radiologicaltechnology is discussed.
Imaging with RadiographicEquipment Course
Students review principles ofphysics and become familiar with radiation dosages before learning how to useimaging equipment. Different types of equipment used by radiologicaltechnologists, including X-ray, mammography and ultrasound technology, areintroduced. Laws and regulations related to imaging equipment use are alsoreviewed. Students must complete this course before beginning clinical courses.
Caring for Patients DuringImaging Course
Radiological technologists mustunderstand proper care procedures for working with patients. This courseteaches future radiographers how to assess a patient's physical ability to beimaged and to instruct the patient on the imaging procedure. Patient safety andimmobilization techniques are demonstrated. Most programs require this courseearly in a 2-year program.
Sectional Anatomy Course
This course provides studentswith detailed understanding of human anatomy. Students learn skills inidentifying cross-sections of human organs in images. Learning sectionalanatomy is critical to radiological technologists when they use magneticresonance imaging (MRI) and computed axial tomography (CAT) scans. This courseis taken in the first year of study.
Radiography Procedures Course
Procedures for producing usefulpictures of the most commonly imaged parts of the body are taught in thiscourse. Anatomy is reviewed. Some radiography procedures courses cover just onesection of the body, and thus several procedures courses may be required. Theseradiological technology courses are completed in the classroom and thelaboratory and are taken throughout the academic program.
Pathology for RadiologicalTechnologists Course
Students learn which diseases andinjuries are commonly detected through radiographic imaging. The ability toidentify diseases and injuries helps radiological technologists evaluate imagesand communicate findings to a doctor. Vocabulary related to disease isintroduced in this course. This course may be taken near the end of aradiography program.
