The course requires students to design and conduct experiments, analyze, interpret data, and write technical engineering reports. This lab-based course gives students an understanding of processes that govern the behavior of pollutants in the environment. The subject includes aspects of intermedia contaminant transport, surface and groundwater hydrology, air pollution modeling, degradation processes and remediation, human exposure pathways and risk analysis. Environmental Engineering is a branch of engineering that protects people from adverse environments and improves overall environmental quality. The study includes topics like Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Geology, Hydraulics, Hydrology, Mathematics, Microbiology, etc., to give solutions to improve the health of all living organisms and enhance life quality. Environmental Engineers use the principles of soil science, biology, and chemistry and develop elucidation for ecological issues. The three primary duties of Environmental scientists are gathering and evaluating environmental data, studying human impacts on the environment, and enhancing ecological conservation management. They use natural resources, advance renewable energy resources, and enlarge the use of existing materials. They work on controlling pollution and contamination. A day in the life of an Environmental engineer would involve:
Collecting samples for inspection
Developing strategies for new structures
Enhancing established systems
Monitoring regulation practices
Some of the structures Environmental Engineers build sewerage systems, wastewater treatment plants, green roofs, etc. They mainly deal with recycling and waste disposal.
Environmental engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to the design of environmental protection and remediation strategies using physical, chemical, and biological treatment methods, all within a regulatory framework. Environmental engineers aim to minimize the adverse effects of human activities on the natural environment. While environmental engineering is often defined by Core Disciplines, it can better be described as a field of study dedicated to three primary objectives. The first is to clean and protect the environment from pollution: think of this as “fixing the past.” Before environmental regulations were introduced, chemicals were released directly into the environment, and there remain tens of thousands of contaminated sites throughout the world. In order to protect human health and the integrity of the environment, engineers study the transport and fate of pollutants through natural systems (see Environmental Transport Modeling) and design treatment systems to restore contaminated sites (see Remediation of Contaminated Sites). The second goal is to control waste streams generated as a result of human activities.
