UKQ UK Approved International Diploma in Manufacturing and Design

Course terms and Description:

The title of this course contains the description ‘Engineered Object’ rather than the more commonly occurring ‘Product’. The term ‘Product‘is mostly associated with items which result from some kind of factory based process which are often purchased directly by the consumer, eg. a car, a washing machine, an electric toothbrush. It is considered that this scope is too narrow for the intended purposes of the methodology. Is the composite material wing of an aircraft or the space frame roof support of an exhibition hall a ‘Product’? It is with this in mind that the term ‘Engineered Object’ has been used to make the scope as wide and generalized as possible. For the purposes of this course, ‘Innovation’ is taken to mean developing something new but which is based on, or has some linkage with what already exists. To enable practical application of the methodology three groupings are proposed, which are defined as follows:-

Elemental Innovation – The complete Engineered Object remains in its well established form but there is an ‘internal’ change to an element of the object which improves the function. Application Innovation – The Engineered Object itself is not fundamentally altered but its use and application is changed in terms of positioning or orientation.

Combination Innovation – The Engineered Object in this case is new but in itself, has no innovative elements. It is rather the bringing together of various existing elements in a new combination or aggregation which provides advantages hitherto unavailable.

Innovative designs require a ‘spark of imagination’ and from a case study review, the paper identifies various examples. To enable classification, further reference and eventually use as tools in the process of innovative design, the ‘sparks of imagination’ are described using an adjective / noun format. These descriptions are defined as Influencing Factors. The Influencing Factor Matrix links Innovation Group and Influencing Factor(s).
