This course is designed to give students the knowledge and skills required to carry out routine maintenance and repair activities on Electric/Hybrid vehicles. It is designed for vehicle technicians / car mechanics to broaden their skills and experience.

This course is designed to introduce and orientate the student to hybrid and electric vehicles. This will be achieved through a series of modules that will be taught in the green energy lab and will include the following: an introduction to types of hybrid and electric vehicles - hybrid safety - maintenance and operation of hybrid vehicles; oil changes/coolant system service, H.V. disconnects, hybrid A/C service procedures and electric power steering. This course will enhance the skill level and general knowledge of the student about hybrid and electric vehicles within their workplace environment.

Participants will learn:

The correct methods for shutting down and isolating high voltage systems

The correct measurement procedures and approved tools

The layout and construction of hybrid and electric drive powertrain systems and the identification of key components

The principles of high voltage battery construction, management and monitoring systems

The design, construction and operating principles of three phase, brushless motor/generator systems

The control systems required for efficient operation, and methods of electrical rectification and regulation

The transmission system operating principles of current Toyota hybrids

The diagnosis of system faults and monitoring of live data using suitable diagnostic equipment

If you’re a technician working with electric hybrid vehicles, this is the perfect course to ensure you’re comfortable and knowledgeable in assessing and fixing any potential problems with them. The course has been developed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), and will give you the skills you need to work safely around the hybrid systems in vehicles. You’ll learn how to effectively repair and maintain hybrid vehicles, understand the dangers of the high voltage system and ensure you can maintain good safety practices at all times.

This award is designed for technicians who maintain and repair electric/hybrid vehicles. It contains the skills and knowledge required to work safely around a vehicle's high & low voltage electrical system and electric drive train system, whilst carrying out repairs or maintenance. On completing this qualification, technicians will have gained knowledge of both low and high voltage technologies and an understanding of their dangers.
